Case study: KLM deep-freeze high-bay warehouse

Fire prevention from WAGNER protects fully automated deep-freeze high-bay warehouse in a class of its own

When commissioned in May 2013, KLM’s deep-freeze high-bay warehouse was the largest of its kind in Germany. Located at the Rheine site in Westphalia, it offers over 8,500 m2 of storage space for 68,400 pallets – all protected against the outbreak of fire by a WAGNER oxygen reduction system with VPSA technology.

Active fire prevention for ice cream and frozen food

About the project

At the time of its commissioning, the fully automated deep-freeze warehouse entered the history books as ‘Germany’s largest refrigerator’. By expanding its existing warehouse, KLM was able to increase its total capacity to 90,000 spaces. The fire prevention solution, based on WAGNER’s OxyReduct® oxygen reduction system, guarantees uninterrupted safety. The VdS-approved solution is also both cost and energy efficient.

About the customer

KLM, a subsidiary of the logistics service provider NewCold, has offered full-service logistics for over 30 years. The head office in Rheine handles 7,000 pallets per day.

Protection objectives

  • Operations
Interruptions to the logistics chain and other business processes as a result of fire must be prevented
  • Asset protection
The frozen goods stored must be protected against smoke, soot and any possible consequential fire damage due to extinguishing measures
  • Personnel protection
KLM employees must be safe from fire at all times
  • Environmental protection
The formation of hazardous materials due to fires and extinguishing agent residues must be prevented

Precautionary fire prevention

The nitrogen needed to reduce the oxygen level is directly obtained from the ambient air in a particularly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly manner using generators with VPSA technology. WAGNER has installed three VPSA systems at KLM, each with a supply volume of 240 m3/h; one of these serves as a 50% redundancy system to meet the emergency concept requirements established in the building permit.

Advantages of the WAGNER fire prevention concept

  • Efficiency
The ultra-modern VPSA technology is energy saving and thus environmentally friendly
  • Installation & service
WAGNER has a tight-knit network of branch offices throughout Germany; the system itself is maintenance friendly
  • Safety
WAGNER’s fire prevention solution is VdS-approved and therefore offers certified safety

The stored goods

The products stored by KLM include ice cream from prestigious brand manufacturers, frozen cakes from Coppenrath & Wiese and a wide range of goods for discounters.

The building

38 m high, 8,535 m2 deep-freeze storage area with a volume of 380,000 m3: the deep-freeze warehouse is in a class of its own and equipped with an automatic loading and unloading system with which a lorry containing 32 pallets can be completely unloaded in just 2 minutes. In total, 5,000 pallets per day can be loaded/unloaded in the new 40-million-euro building.

Customer voice
