Fire protection supports operational readiness

Resilience in defense logistics starts with fire prevention

The European defense industry is growing. As investment in security and defense increases, new production, logistics, and storage capacities are being created for spare parts, electronics, and other mission-critical materials. Experts continue to anticipate growing demand for industrial and logistics real estate in the defense sector, both for new construction and for the conversion of existing properties.

This shifts the focus more strongly onto the real estate itself: A reliable infrastructure becomes a strategic factor for stable supply chains, sufficient production capacity, and the availability of security-related logistics processes.

At the same time, safety aspects are becoming increasingly important. A fire in a warehouse storing defense-related goods has consequences that go far beyond property damage: If critical components, communication systems, or supplies are damaged, production processes can come to a standstill and supply chains can be severely disrupted. Fire protection thus becomes an essential component of resilient warehousing and production facilities and supports the defense industry’s long-term supply and operational capabilities.

Specific risks in defense logistics

Traditional industrial or commercial warehouses already face a variety of risk factors; defense sites often have additional requirements. In addition to hazardous materials, these sites increasingly store lithium-ion batteries, sensitive electronics, communication systems, high-value spare parts, and supplies.

Five key fire risks in defense warehouses

  • Highly sensitive electronics and communications systems
  • Highly automated warehousing and logistics systems
  • Hazardous materials and special stored goods
  • Energy storage devices such as lithium-ion batteries
  • Fuels and other flammable substances

The high degree of automation – for example, in high-bay warehouses or automated small-parts warehouses with driverless transport systems – ensures efficient processes and optimal use of space, but makes it difficult to access potential seats of fire in the event of a fire. Incipient fires can develop unnoticed at first and cause significant damage. In addition to the fire itself, smoke, soot particles, and unsuitable extinguishing agents also pose a risk to many of the stored goods, which can result in significant economic and operational consequences.

Prevention instead of reaction

As safety-critical production and logistics sites continue to expand, the importance of effective fire protection strategies is growing. While traditional systems are often designed to extinguish fires that have already started, innovative approaches aim to detect the seats of fires at an early stage and prevent fires whenever possible in order to minimize potential damage. To this end, they combine various technologies that complement each other effectively, working together to help ensure the long-term availability of critical infrastructure.

To meet these requirements, WAGNER relies on holistic solutions that include early fire detection, active fire prevention, and residue-free fire extinguishing.

Early fire detection plays a central role in this process. Highly sensitive TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors continuously sample the air in the area being monitored and detect even the smallest amounts of smoke particles. This allows an alarm to be triggered very early in the fire’s progression, even before an open flame develops. Supported by intelligent sensor technology and digital monitoring solutions, critical areas can be continuously monitored, and countermeasures can be taken at an early stage.

This provides a decisive advantage, particularly in highly automated warehouse and production environments: Major disruptions can be prevented before they affect operations. Fire detection thus plays a key role in the availability of logistics processes and the resilience of the entire supply chain.

OxyReduct® oxygen reduction systems take effect even before a potential fire occurs. Through the controlled introduction of nitrogen, the oxygen content in protected areas is permanently reduced to a level that prevents a fire from developing or spreading under defined conditions. The goal of oxygen reduction is not fire extinguishing, but preventing fires from starting or spreading right from the outset.

Depending on the risk analysis and the definition of protection goals, the use of FirExting® fire extinguishing systems may also be advisable. FirExting® systems flood the affected area with extinguishing gas and extinguish the fire quickly and residue-free. This protects sensitive electronics, communication systems, and high-value stored goods in particular from additional damage.

Particularly in highly automated high-bay or small-parts warehouses, the combination of very early fire detection, preventive fire prevention, and effective fire extinguishing can reduce business interruptions, protect critical goods, and ensure the long-term availability of logistics processes and critical infrastructure.

Resilience as a strategic task

In defense logistics, downtime can have far-reaching consequences. If warehouses or production sites are disrupted, this has a direct impact on supply chains, production capacity, and the availability of security-related goods.

In this context, resilience refers to a site's ability to reliably fulfill its tasks even under difficult conditions. Given this, fire protection becomes a strategic factor for the ability to deliver, production reliability, and operational readiness in defense logistics. It is therefore not enough to view fire protection solely from the perspective of damage mitigation. Rather, it is crucial to manage risks early on and avoid business interruptions whenever possible.

Holistic fire protection solutions therefore aim to reduce the risk of downtime and ensure the long-term availability of safety-critical sites. In addition, they make an important contribution to risk management by supporting a well-founded assessment of risks and helping to document the protection of critical systems in a transparent manner.

To this end, structural, organizational, and technical measures are combined into a holistic approach to protection. Highly sensitive early fire detection, active fire prevention, and high-performance fire extinguishing systems work together to enable logistics and production processes to resume quickly even in the event of a disruption.

Conclusion

Safe production and logistics sites for a resilient defense industry

As the European defense industry expands, new requirements are emerging regarding the safety of production and logistics sites. In this context, fire protection is evolving from a technical standard into a key element of resilience.

In particular, the combination of highly sensitive early fire detection, residue-free fire extinguishing technology, and preventive oxygen reduction helps to control risks early on, protect critical goods, and ensure the long-term availability of logistics processes. After all, the resilience of today’s defense industry and logistics sites is not determined only in the event of a fire, but rather by measures that prevent fires from starting or make them manageable at an early stage.
