GRASS-MERKUR

Reliable fire protection for data center operations

The GRASS-MERKUR data center in Hanover is home to the Cloud Exchange HAN-CIX, a central hub for digital data traffic from the region to DE-CIX in Frankfurt, which is one of the world's largest internet exchange points. A data center like GRASS-MERKUR is much more than a building full of servers. It acts as an interface where companies, cloud providers, and network operators can bundle, exchange, and accelerate their data streams. This creates a powerful digital ecosystem that guarantees short distances, low latencies, and high reliability—important prerequisites for modern business processes, from online commerce to Industry 4.0 applications.

HAN-CIX

Data node for the region

HAN-CIX is special because it combines regional roots with international connectivity. Instead of taking long detours via distant network nodes, companies from Hanover and the surrounding area can exchange data directly here. This saves time, increases speed, and strengthens the data flow against disruptions. For many businesses, this represents a significant competitive advantage.

Insights into the GRASS-MERKUR data center, including fire protection technology

Technical safety precautions in the data center are essential to ensure reliable operation of this digital hub. Fire protection is crucial: even the slightest smoke can damage servers and storage systems, resulting in data disruption and system failure.

Fire protection

Fire risk in the data center

The highest fire risk in data centers results from the high electrical power density and the large number of components installed. Overloads or insulation faults can lead to short circuits and thermal hotspots, which can ignite fires. The complex infrastructure, which includes dense cabling, cable trays, and raised floor systems with cavities, requires reliable and early fire detection. Recirculating air cooling is another critical factor: the high airflow rate that ensures efficient temperature regulation can increase the oxygen supply in the event of a fire, which can accelerate flame and smoke development. These risks can be minimized by using suitable cables and materials (halogen-free and flame-retardant) as well as by implementing permanent oxygen reduction (OxyReduct®).

Application

Specific fire protection solution for maintaining 24/7 availability

To achieve the defined protection goals, GRASS-MERKUR relies on a comprehensive fire protection concept that incorporates fire detection, prevention, and suppression. The goal is to prevent shutting down the power supply upon detection and ensure an uninterrupted supply to IT systems.

The data center uses highly sensitive TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors for early fire detection. They continuously sample the air and detect even the smallest smoke particles. This enables potential fires to be identified early, and appropriate measures to be taken immediately before any damage to IT equipment occurs. Intelligent fire pattern recognition technology in the TITANUS® aspirating smoke detectors ensures a high immunity to false alarms.

The OxyReduct® system reduces oxygen levels to prevent fires. It reduces the oxygen concentration below the ignition limit of the materials present. Depending on the protected area, the oxygen level is in the range of 14% or 17%. These values ensure that people can access the area at any time, whether for maintenance work or to address a detection directly.

However, if there is a critical increase in the measured values, the system activates the FirExting® N2 gas extinguishing system. The system feeds nitrogen into the protected area as an extinguishing gas, which rapidly reduces the oxygen content and immediately prevents a fire from developing without leaving any residue. This allows adjacent areas that are not directly affected to continue operating without interruption.

To maintain stable protection levels after a rapid reduction, the OxyReduct® system continuously generates additional nitrogen from the surrounding air and directs it into the protected area. Thus, the oxygen concentration remains at 14%, for example. This reliably prevents backfires and the spread of fire.

GRASS-MERKUR's multi-level fire protection concept ensures the operation of the entire data center, including the HAN-CIX cloud exchange, around the clock. This makes it a powerful, secure, and trustworthy hub for regional and international data traffic.
